Apostolic Visitation closes with final report submission
Jan. 9, 2012
HAMDEN, Conn. -Mother Mary Clare Millea, A.S.C.J., Apostolic Visitator for Institutes of Women Religious in the United States, recently presented an overall summary of her findings to Archbishop Joseph Tobin, C.Ss.R., Secretary of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life (CICLSAL).
In addition to the comprehensive report, which fulfills the mandate&rsquos original decree, she has submitted most of the individual reports for each of the nearly 400 religious institutes that were a part of the Apostolic Visitation. The target date for completion of the remaining institute reports is spring 2012.
The Apostolic Visitation was initiated Dec. 22, 2008, by former CICLSAL Prefect, Cardinal Franc Rodé, C.M., to "look into the quality of the life" of apostolic institutes of women religious in the United States.
Mother Millea and her team completed the review of the religious institutes at the end of 2010. The time since then has been spent in compilation and summation of findings, which led to the final report. CICLSAL has not yet specified when it will announce its conclusions pertaining to the Apostolic Visitation.
The initial three phases of the Visitation "four-phase process included Mother Millea" personal meetings or communication with interested superiors general, a comprehensive questionnaire to major superiors in the United States and on-site visits by teams of selected religious to approximately one-fourth of the institutes. The fourth phase involved the preparation of the general summary report as well as a report on each of the institutes that were a part of the Visitation.
"The Apostolic Visitation generated widespread interest", said Mother Millea. The attention to it has resulted in a renewed appreciation for the role of religious in the Church and society and has increased dialogue and mutual awareness among the various communities in the United States. These tangible benefits of the Visitation will continue to be realized".
Mother Millea added that the three-year charge was "demanding, but equally refreshing. As a religious myself, I am keenly aware of our history and vital role in the Church in the United States", she said. "I also see the joys and hardships of religious life daily in my own community. But as I learned of and observed firsthand the perseverance of the religious in the United States in their vocations, in their ministries and in their faith -and witnessed the fruits of their service-. I have been both inspired and humbled. Although there are concerns in religious life that warrant support and attention, the enduring reality is one of fidelity, joy, and hope".

Apostolic Visitation gathers religious in review of on-site visits
March 8, 2011
HAMDEN, Conn. Mother Mary Clare Millea, ASCJ, Apostolic Visitator for Institutes of Women Religious in the United States, held a concluding workshop March 4-6 for the religious who assisted last year with on-site visits to congregations of women religious. The event took place at the U.S. provincial headquarters of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Archbishop Joseph Tobin, CSsR, Secretary of the Vatican Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life (CICLSAL), attended the three-day gathering. Bishop William Lori of Bridgeport served as concelebrant and homilist for one of the weekend Eucharistic celebrations.
The 58 participants included the core team and consultants for the Visitation along with more than half of the women and men religious who served as on-site Visitors to selected religious congregations. Sister Joan McGlinchey, MSC, facilitated the meeting sessions.
In view of the summary report which Mother Millea is preparing for CICLSAL, she invited the visitors to share their personal impressions of their on-site visit experience, as well as their observations of the common hopes, challenges and concerns that women religious presently face. The group also offered suggestions for further promoting respectful dialogue and collaboration among religious congregations and within the Church.
Brother Paul Bednarczyk, CSC, executive director of the National Religious Vocation Conference addressed the assembly on the Moving Forward in Hope project, which charts a path of renewal for religious life and the promotion of new vocations.
"Archbishop Tobin listened attentively to the heartfelt sharing of the participants, Mother Millea said at the conclusion of the weekend. He expressed his deep understanding of our reality and expressed the continued support of the Congregation for Consecrated Life in fostering the ongoing revitalization of religious life in the United States".
Mother Millea added that "our American systems of education, healthcare and social service owe much to the vision and labors of our predecessors. The Apostolic Visitation has given American Catholics the opportunity to voice their appreciation and esteem for our early sisters and for us who revere them as our models of courage and faith".
She also stated that"this gathering has been a great grace and joy and gave me much with which to enhance my final reports. Even more important, the deepened bonds of mutual understanding and collaboration among us and with CICLSAL do much to promote the vitality of religious life in the context of respectful dialogue and ecclesial communion.
The Apostolic Visitation was initiated by CICLSAL in December 2008. Mother Millea final reports will be submitted by the end of 2011. For more information, visit apostolicvisitation.org.

Oración para la Visitación Apostólica de los Institutos de Religiosas de Estados Unidos de 2009-2010
Visitation Prayer
O Virgin of the Visitation,
compelled by the Holy Spirit,
and with Jesus hidden beneath your Heart,
you arose in those days and, with haste,
went to your kinswoman Elizabeth,
to serve her in her time of need.
Elizabeth acknowledged your faith,
and a new song came to flower on your lips;
thus did you magnify the Father
whose mercy is from generation to generation.
Visit us now, O Mother of Our Lord,
and obtain for us a quickening of prophetic grace,
that we may serve our sisters in faithfully loving the Church,
and love the Church in humbly serving our sisters,
and so, under your gracious protection,
again and again repeat your words:
&ldquoBehold, I am the handmaid of the Lord;
be it done unto me according to your word.&rdquo
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary!
